Your first boat rental should be the start of a great summer, not a stressful week. Most first-time problems come from things you could have sorted out at home: a missing certificate, nowhere to tie up, the wrong boat for the group. Work through this checklist before you rent and the first day goes smoothly.

The short answer

Before you rent: get your Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate, confirm where the boat will be kept, pick a boat that fits your group and your plans, and get in writing what the rental includes. On day one, do a walkthrough with the delivery team, keep the first trip short, and learn the lake's basic rules.

Before you book

1. Get your boating certificate

Anyone driving a motorized boat in Connecticut needs a Safe Boating Certificate. It's a one-time certificate, and you can take the course online. Have at least one adult in your household get it before the rental starts. If nobody wants to drive, book a captain for the day instead. Details: do you need a boating license in Connecticut.

2. Confirm where the boat will live

A weekly or seasonal rental is delivered to your dock. Check that your dock (or the lake-house dock you're renting) has room and enough water depth, and that your lake association or landlord allows it.

3. Pick the right boat

Count your group honestly and think about what you'll do most. A pontoon is the best choice for big groups, swimming, and cruising. A ski/wake boat is for wakeboarding, waterskiing, and wakesurfing. A deck boat or bowrider does a bit of everything. See which boat is right for your group.

4. Ask what's included

Get these answers in writing:

  • Is insurance included, and what does it cover?
  • Who handles registration?
  • What happens if the boat breaks down? Who do I call?
  • Are life jackets and watersports gear included?
  • What's the fuel policy?
  • What are the delivery and pickup dates?

Our answers are in what a long-term boat rental includes.

On delivery day

  • Do the walkthrough. Learn how to start and stop the boat, trim, the kill switch, the bilge pump, lights, and where the fire extinguisher and throwable float are.
  • Check the life jackets. Make sure there's one for every person, sized correctly for each kid. Children under 13 must wear one while underway. See Connecticut life jacket laws.
  • Save the service number in your phone.
  • Practice docking a few times with nobody else aboard, before the whole family piles on.
From a captain

Every first-timer worries about docking, and every one of them gets it. Go slow, come in at an angle, and use short bursts of throttle. If it's not working, back out and try again. Nobody on the dock is keeping score.

Your first day out

  1. Go early. Connecticut lakes are calmest in the morning, before the wind and the weekend traffic.
  2. Keep it short. An hour or two the first time, then build up.
  3. Check the weather. If thunder is in the forecast, stay off the water. If you hear thunder while you're out, head in.
  4. Learn the lake. Note the no-wake zones, shallow areas, and markers. Ask the delivery team where the trouble spots are.
  5. Bring the basics. Water, sunscreen, snacks, and a dry bag for phones. Here's our lake-day packing list.

Lake rules and etiquette

  • Go slow (no wake) near docks, swimmers, and shorelines. Your wake is your responsibility.
  • Keep right when passing oncoming boats and give towed riders plenty of room.
  • When towing, have a spotter watching the rider at all times, and make sure riders wear life jackets.
  • Don't drink and drive a boat. Connecticut enforces boating under the influence like a DUI.
  • Never run the engine near swimmers or anyone in the water behind the boat.

Rules vary by lake and change over time. Check CT DEEP and your lake authority for current local rules.

Quick FAQ

The course can be done online in a few hours. Leave a couple of weeks before your rental so the certificate arrives in time.
Connecticut has age rules for operating boats. Check current CT DEEP rules and the rental agreement before letting a teen drive.
